An enthralling story of dark secrets and lost love on the hippy trail by a best-selling British author. 1976 friends, Marcus and Ruth, go missing in Afghanistan during an overland bus trip to Kathmandu. A generation later, Ruth's niece Amber, haunted by the disintegration of her family, determines to get at the truth of their disappearance. Was it murder, as her father suspected, or a suicide pact as the police believed? Tracking down the trip's bus driver, Cassidy, Amber starts to piece together a lost world - the mystical vibrant hippy trail to India - and colourful characters like Juliet, who imagined herself the reincarnation of an Edwardian traveller. As the mystery surrounding her aunt and the charismatic Marcus unfolds, Amber begins a journey of discovery of her own, that will lead her not only into the dark secrets of the past and lost love, but face to face with a tragedy much closer to home. Bonus content Interview with the author about her own overland adventure as an 18 year old that inspired the story Discussion notes for reading groups Reading Groups' praise for The Vanishing of Ruth 'Loved the book - couldn't put it down!' 'Wonderful. Kept me guessing all the way through.' 'A most enjoyable read, with so many interesting characters and very good descriptions of the areas visited. The end was an interesting surprise. Thank you for a captivating read.' 'I love split-time storylines and this was perfect.' 'I thoroughly enjoyed this journey through time and distant lands without leaving the comfort of my armchair. The contrast between the Victorians, the hippies and the modern day was fascinating.' 'It would make a fabulous screenplay - the split stories, great characters, wonderful locations and a well-resolved murder mystery at its heart - and there was a lot enthusiasm in the room for the idea!' I was a courier on the Asian Overland, aka the Hippy Trail, in the first period that this novel is set. So I read this novel even though my reading is usually confined to books on science or philosophy. Gad, suh. Couldn't put the damn thing down. Finished it at 0320hrs!

Being used to heavier fare, I found the short chapters, frequent perspective and time changes - it is formatted as two linked narratives about 30 years apart - made it very simple and easy to read. A well crafted work.

The first thing that struck me was just how authentic it seemed. To me it was highly evocative of that time and space, so it was no surprise to learn that the author had herself completed an Asian Overland in 1976. The characterizations were particularly realistic. I knew several drivers who were a lot like Cassidy, one of the novel's main protagonists. No couriers in it, though. If there had been, of course Ruth would not have vanished in the first place (ahem).

Later, I realized that the book is not just about the overland; it has even more universal resonances than that trail because, at core, it is about personal identity construction. As in this book, The Asian Overland was a vehicle for that process for many, including me, in real life.

The Asian Overland was mind-blowing in all sorts of ways, especially in realizing on the one hand how partial, and sometimes phoney, the Western narratives we had been raised within actually were, and on the other, how we should count our blessings in so many ways for the luck of our places of birth.

In this book, such a heavy burden was carried very lightly. You fly through the book so fast that it's really only later, when you reflect upon it, that such issues arise. But back at the surface, (phew), it's a mystery story. I kicked myself for not guessing the solution; obvious in hindsight; silly me.

Hmm. So maybe Ruth would have vanished even if there had been a courier.

Thank you, Janet MacLeod Trotter, for bringing a wonderful - but, like Ruth, vanished - journey back to life for a few short hours, even if those hours included 0300, when this old man should have been snoring.

This was full of intrigue. A great read
Wonderful book. My new favorite author. Loved the jarrow series. Now reading the tunes dale saga
I thought the Vanishing of Ruth was a good story. The bus traveling back & forth was a little much, I learned about countries & customs.
very haunting story with an unusual ending
Well written, funny and generally entertaining. I read it (very appropriately) whilst traveling for my work in Asia. Too young to be a real hippy, but I certainly could emphatize with the characters. Would recommend!
I have just discovered Janet MacLeod Trotter. My favorite genre is fiction with a touch of fantasy and/or dark mystery; I love a creepy element that doesn't keep me awake at night. Her books (I've read three now) are the perfect blend of adventure, intrigue, and darkness. I have only been able to anticipate ONE outcome so far! Many twists and pleasant prose (not to difficult, not to simple); hers are real "page turners" for me.
This is a darned good adventure story set in the not so distant days when places like Afghanistan were exciting destinations without the guns and bombs. I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in the Middle East during the 1960's and 70s.
